Koiraparkki.com – Behaviour Training

Do you have a problem dog, or a dog problem?

Sometimes a dog’s behaviour is a genuine challenge, and sometimes it’s a misunderstanding: the dog is doing exactly what it has learned to do, while the person expects something else.

Before training begins, we find out what is the root problem causing the behaviour and plan a training programme. Training teaches the dog an alternative way to act and gives the owner the tools to keep practising at home.

Whatever the issue, training is never wasted effort. It doesn’t always remove the problem completely — some behaviour comes from the dog’s temperament, history or breed traits — but everyday life always gets easier once you understand your dog better and know how to handle situations.

”A dog that pulls, reacts, is nervous or fearful is not a lost cause. Let’s find out the root of the problem and what can be done about it.”

Behaviour training means working with behaviour that disrupts everyday life for the dog or the family: pulling on the leash, barking, reactivity towards other dogs or people, separation anxiety, resource guarding, or difficulty settling down.

Most of the time it isn’t disobedience — the dog simply doesn’t know how to act differently in the situation.

Frequently asked questions

Regular training teaches new skills. Behaviour training first looks at why the dog behaves a certain way and where the problems come from, and only then starts correcting the behaviour by teaching a better way to act. The focus is on the dog’s emotional state and environment, not just commands.

The most common ones are pulling on the leash, reactivity towards dogs or people, jumping and barking, shyness, poor recall, resource guarding, separation anxiety, and difficulty settling down.

No. It’s never too old to learn something new! An adult dog learns well — training may take a little longer if a long-standing habit needs correcting. With an older dog, we take physical condition and stamina into account and keep sessions short.

The first signs often appear within a few weeks if training is consistent. Lasting change typically takes 2–6 months, depending on the scope of the problem and how much training is done.

No. Some behaviour is tied to the dog’s temperament, breed traits or past, so not everything disappears completely. Training always makes everyday life easier, though: you learn to anticipate situations, and your dog gets tools to cope with them.

Your dog stays with us around the clock — it lives with us. The dog is guided and supervised 24 hours a day and trains daily with a trainer. It also spends time in a pack with other dogs that already have the right habits, which supports its learning. During boot camp the dog is taught a new way to behave and react, and old habits fade away. Over the course of the training, the new behaviour becomes established and reinforced. At the end of the period we go through what’s been learned with you and give you instructions and teach techniques and give training videos so practice can continue at home in the same way.

Yes — certain basic obedience and behavioral issues can be trained this way. We add short guided training sessions throughout the daycare day, so your dog trains without you needing to set aside separate time or go to evening dog-training classes. For a strongly reactive dog, though, we recommend a calmer environment and one-on-one training.

Rescue dogs often lack experience of everyday life, and many things are genuinely frightening to them. A rescue dog should be given at least 2 to 3 months before starting training. By then it has settled in, and the worst stress from the new environment and new things has started to ease. That’s why we start with the basics — building safety and trust — and move forward one thing at a time at the dog’s own pace. We only raise the bar once the dog is ready.

Yes, always! Even though we train the dog, we always train the owner too — including during boot camp. The dog learns quickly, but the skills only last if the same approach and techniques are used at home as in training. We teach you the practical techniques and guide you hands-on, not just with instructions on paper.

We only use positive-reinforcement, reward-based methods, always putting the dog’s wellbeing first. We do not use tools or methods based on pain or fear.

Prices are shown for each training programme when you open its box. The price always includes an initial assessment, a written summary of our observations and the training, teaching videos, a practice plan to take home, and follow-up sessions.

We always assess each situation individually. Please be open about what has happened when you contact us. Some cases are handled with individual training, and if needed we’ll refer you for an assessment by a vet or a behaviour therapist.
